The Optimism network completed its update “bedrock” on June 7, reducing deposit times, lowering Tier 1 fees and enacting additional security features, according to an announcement from network developer OP Labs. The update is part of a series of reforms that the developer says will help create a “Superchain” of scalable Web3 networks based on Optimism’s OP Stack software.
✅OP Mainnet’s migration to Bedrock has concluded and the Bedrock sequencer has started up.

In a conversation with Cointelegraph, the CEO of OP Labs, Karl Floersch, I declare that Bedrock implements multiple gas optimizations that the team discovered, reducing network data availability fees on Ethereum by 40%. These reductions are passed on to the user in the form of lower gas rates on Optimism.
In addition, the update allows the network to recognize chain reorganizations on the Ethereum network, reflecting these reorganizations in the user’s Optimism balance. This makes it possible to reduce deposit times to one minute. Previously, Ethereum deposits to Optimism took an average of 10 minutes due to the need to obtain finality on L1.
Bedrock also implements a two-step removal process to help prevent bridging exploits.
In addition to these immediate changes, the new update paves the way for further development of the OP Stack in the future, with the ultimate goal of building a multi-network “Superchain,” Floersch stated. It features “modular proofing systems” that allow developers to create and customize their own blockchain networks. And the validator component of the software, dubbed “op-geth,” has fewer than 1,000 lines of code that differ from the Ethereum version, which could make it easier for validators to switch.
On February 23, Coinbase’s Base network announced that it will also be part of the Superchain. On May 24, it submitted a roadmap detailing its plans for its mainnet launch.
