The initiative proposes the reduction of the workday (from 48 hours to 35 hours), two days of obligatory rest and establishes a hybrid mode of at least two days of teleworking in paid activities “that so allow”, this last addition is contained in the second transitory article of the reform project.
Senators Gabriela Benavides Cobos, Alejandra Lagunes Soto Ruiz and Senator Israel Zamora Guzmán, authors of the initiative, assured that with a more accessible working day, which allows the use of Information technology (ICTs) it is possible to benefit not only workers, but also problems that endanger life on the planet.
“Establish a new hybrid work scheme (face-to-face work and telecommuting), its favorable scope may be greater than expected, especially in the health of people and the environment,” they agreed.
Is the reform beneficial for the environment?
The reform project that modifies various sections of section A and B of article 123 of the Constitutionhighlights that the more the amount of workers, also the consumption of materials to carry out the work activity; Added to this, the document specifies that the time and means used by a worker to travel to his workplace have an impact on the environment.
“It affects an increase in the use of private vehicles or public transport, causing an increase in polluting gases and greater traffic on communication routes. In the event that a person spends 1 hour commuting from their home to the workplace and 1 hour commuting from the workplace to their home, per day there are 2 hours lost in the traffic congestion; if you multiply the 2 hours of commuting by 5 work days, it is a total of 10 hours lost per week in transit. If the 10 weekly hours are multiplied by a month of work (equivalent to 4 weeks), it is a total of 40 hours lost, for 12 months of work, it is a total of 480 hours lost per year in transit who cannot see their family or perform another leisure activity, but also 480 hours per person using a combustion vehicle”, breaks down the initiative.
